NYC City Hall Elopement Photography: A Planning Guide

NYC City Hall elopement photography is one of my favorite things to shoot in New York: a short, meaningful ceremony, just the two of you and a few people you love, followed by portraits in some of the most photogenic streets in the city. If you are planning a City Hall wedding, here is what I tell couples about the logistics, the timing and how we make the most of the day with photographs.

First, the official steps

These details come from the Office of the City Clerk and NYC311. Rules and fees can change, so always confirm on nyc.gov/cupid before your date.

  • Appointments only. The City Clerk's offices do not accept walk-ins. You schedule both your marriage license and your ceremony through Project Cupid, and the license appointment can be in person or virtual.
  • The marriage license. The fee is $35. The license is usually valid for 60 days, and the ceremony must take place at least 24 hours after you receive it (a judicial waiver is possible if you need to marry sooner).
  • The ceremony. A City Clerk ceremony costs $25. In Manhattan it takes place at the Office of the City Clerk in the Municipal Building, 141 Worth Street. Ceremonies run Monday through Friday.
  • Witness and guests. You need at least one witness over 18, and there can be no more than six attendees in total, including the two of you and your witness. Bring the same photo ID you used for the license.
  • Same-day certificate. When the ceremony takes place at the City Clerk's office, you receive your marriage certificate that same day.

Why couples choose City Hall

A City Hall wedding strips a wedding down to what matters. There is no seating chart and no long day of logistics, and the ceremony itself is brief. Many couples I work with want exactly that, then spend the rest of the time on portraits and a great dinner. It is also a beautiful option for couples who plan to have a larger celebration later, or who are traveling to New York to marry.

How I plan the photography

My City Hall / Elopement package is $1,500 for two hours of coverage and includes 75 edited images, delivered in an online gallery. That time usually covers:

  • Arrival and waiting. Some of the most honest moments happen before your name is called: nervous laughs, fixing a boutonniere, holding hands.
  • The ceremony. It is short, so I stay close and focused on your faces, your vows and the first kiss.
  • Portraits around the city. Afterward we walk. Lower Manhattan is full of architecture, cobblestones and views, and my studio is right there on Broad Street. We can head toward the Brooklyn Bridge, the side streets of the Financial District or anywhere that feels like you.

If you want more coverage, my events and weddings pricing also lists longer wedding packages, plus an Engagement Session ($950) and Proposal Coverage ($650) if you are still planning the question.

Timing tips from experience

  • Build in buffer time. Arrive early for your appointment, and do not schedule a dinner reservation too tightly after the ceremony.
  • Think about light. Later in the day often gives softer light for portraits. I will help you plan the portrait walk around your ceremony time.
  • Check the weather, but do not fear it. Some of my favorite New York images are made in rain and fog. A clear umbrella and a good attitude go a long way.
  • Keep your paperwork together. License, IDs and witness in one place, so nobody is searching a bag while the clerk is waiting.

What to wear

There is no dress code beyond what feels right to you: a gown, a tailored suit, a simple dress or a sharp jacket all work. For photographs, I suggest shoes you can walk in for a couple of hours and a layer for cooler months. If you want professional hair and makeup, I can add it to your booking.

Beyond the ceremony

New York is my home and my subject. My Urbanology series is a love letter to this city's bridges, rain and skyline, including The Bridge and Empire in the Sky. I bring the same eye for light and atmosphere to wedding portraits. Some couples even choose a limited edition print of a place that meant something to them on their wedding day as a keepsake for their home; you can browse everything in the shop.
